About This Blog

Welcome to Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

The theme of this blog is inspired by Qohelet (the biblical book more commonly known as Ecclesiastes):

“Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot.”

This particular wording comes from Ecc. 5:18, but it is a refrain repeated over and over again. My interpretation? That’s right!

Eat, drink, and be merry – maybe not because “tomorrow we die,” as the more common saying goes – but because life is too short not to get as much enjoyment as you can out of it.

I have transformed my old personal blog to be geared specifically toward all the things in life in which I find enjoyment. That list is pretty long for me, because I’m the type of person that loves to find the “simple pleasures” in life. The transformation starts today, January 27th, 2009, so any posts before then may or may not be along those lines. I also have another blog, geared toward my academic life, with my husband: http://www.thefloppyhat.com/

Why did I decide to theme a blog this way? Well, I’m a full-time grad student, I have a part-time job, my husband is also a grad student, I’m heavily involved in church ministry, both my husband and I will be applying to Ph.D programs soon – in short, life is often very stressful and busy! I don’t often have a lot of time when school is in session to do many of the things that I enjoy doing for hobbies. However, this blog is a place for me to remind myself that I need to slow down and enjoy all those simple things I love – because life is too short not to – even if that just means taking pleasure in the Great Egret that frequents the pond outside the seminary three seasons out of the year.

If I am able to help any of my readers find some enjoyment as well, all the better!
